Less than three minutes into the first
round, Mike kept composure and capitalized on Urijah’s mistake. The
result was a stunning win. The fight ended in 2 minutes, 23 seconds
of the first round. Lucky? No! If you have followed Mike Brown's career,
it is pretty safe to say that this win and this title was well over
due. Brown has been there and back with countless battles in the cage.
Tony: Congrats on the big win and taking the
title away from Faber.
Mike: It’s been a long journey and it’s good to be on top right now,
it feels good.
Tony: Going into this fight you looked really
relaxed. Did you feel your game plan paid off for this fight?
Mike: O yeah. I was really relaxed going into the fight. I was fighting
out of my home town in Florida, so everything was great.
Tony: Did you expect Faber to come out really
strong in the first round?
Mike: You know he is wild and very unpredictable. So I pretty much kept
good defense and I capitalized on one of his mistakes and that’s exactly
what happened.
Tony: Do you see a rematch right away with faber?
Or will you take some other fights in your weight class first?
Mike: O for sure, but there are a lot of top fighters in that weight
class. So we’ll definitely see what happens and who is put in front
of me.
Tony: Where are you currently training?
Mike: American Top Team.
Tony: Who are some of the training partners that
helped you out for this fight?
Mike: Yves Edwards is the main guy I train with, but there’s just a
lot of guys I train with. Guys like Marcus Aurelio, we just have a tune
of talent over here at American Top team. Guys with a lot of great talent.
Tony: Any time off during the week of training
for a fight or getting ready for a fight?
Mike: Pretty much Monday through Saturday with Sunday off. But Monday
through Friday I train twice a day where on Saturdays I’m only training
once.
Tony: Now that you've won the title, are you
gonna take some time off, or is it back to the gym?
Mike: I’m gonna take some weeks off. This last fight I tore some cartilage
in my rib, at the end when I was threw some of the punches I felt like
I tore something and it was shifting around. But I just had an x-ray
done and it’s like some cartilage is just torn, so I should be back
in full swing in about four weeks or so.
Tony: For a fighter such as yourself, Mike, who
has been around the fight game for as long as you have, what are the
reasons for your success in this sport?
Mike: I love what I do, you know. So this makes me just wanna learn
more and more. Being very passionate about it can’t help but make you
better. This is especially true when you are around a lot of talent.
And that’s what I do, I surround myself with great people and great
talent. Because of this, only good things are the end result.
Tony: Aside from Faber, are there any other fighters
out there who you would like to fight in upcoming bouts?
Mike: Pretty much whoever the WEC puts in front of me. They have a lot
of tough guys, guys like Fabian, Faber, Garcia, Tumora from Japan. They
just have a lot of talent in the WEC. So I think its not gonna be hard
for them to find me someone to fight for my next fight.
Tony: Coming up in this sport, who were some
of the fighters you looked up to/respected, when you first started your
career?
Mike: You know, one of my all time favorites and still is, is Genki
Sudo. I fought him back in the UFC when I was younger. I just love his
style, you know. He’s so entertaining to watch. As far as guys I look
up to, its guys like Jens Pulver. He was the top dog when I was coming
up, so definitely Jens.
Tony: Well thank you again Mike and I wish you
luck in your next fight.
Mike: thank you. |
