Unbeaten in his Mixed Martial Arts professional
career, Johny Hendricks is about to make his UFC debut. Sporting a 5-0
record, he is set to lock horns with TUF season 7 winner Amir Sadollah.
Mike: What's up man, I just wanted to start out
by finding out a little bit more about you're time wrestling at OSU.
What was that like?
Hendricks: Well it was one of the best times I have ever had in my life.
The people were friendly, and they loved wrestling… hats why I wanted
to go there. Also OSU had the best wrestling coaches and wrestlers at
that time, and if you want to be the best you have to workout with the
best.
Mike: And how did you make the switch to MMA
and get with Team Takedown?
Hendricks: Well Jake was coaching Ted's kids in wrestling, and he asked
Jake if he would like to do it. He said "yes, why not?" And
Ted asked him if he knew anyone who would like to try it out as well....
and I loved watching the UFC, and every time it was on I was watching.
So I really wanted to try it out! Ted called me, and I said "let’s
make a memory of it" and here I am, fighting for a living. (laughs).
Mike: So far in your transition, what has been
the most difficult aspect of the game to pick-up?
Hendricks: At first it was getting hit. That was the only thing I had
trouble getting use to. When you get hit, you have to stay in control
of yourself or you will get tired really quick... and could end up getting
hurt.
Mike: Currently you are sporting an undefeated
record and picked up a decision win over Alex Serdyokuv in your last
fight… could you give us your thoughts on that fight?
Hendricks: Yeah, he was a tough guy. I think that the ref should have
stopped it in the second round, when I was just hitting him over and
over again... but if that happened I guess I wouldn’t of had the fight
of the night. Plus I got to show my heart, you know. Not being able
to hit him in the last round really made him think that he could win,
but I took his best shots and nothing happened. And I gave him my best
shots and I knocked him down. So that gives me the confidence that I
can knock someone out… and that’s all I need.
Mike: After that win, you made the jump to the
UFC… could you tell us how you felt, when you first heard you would
be fighting for them?
Hendricks: I knew who ever won that fight was going into the UFC, well
that’s the way I looked at it at least. After I got my hand raised,
I looked over at Ron my boxing coach and Marc my BJJ coach and said
"we are in the UFC man!!" And we all really couldn't believe
it at the time... but I know in my heart this is where I belong.
Mike: You will be making your UFC debut at UFC
101, against TUF winner Amir Sadollah… how do you feel you matchup with
him?
Hendricks: I feel that I match up really well with him. If I didn't
think that I could win, I wouldn't be doing it. His stand up is good,
but so is mine. His ground game is good, but so is mine. In every way,
I think I'm better... and he probably thinks the same things. (laughs).
Mike: And how is your training going for this
fight?
Hendricks: So far great! I'm getting stronger and faster… and my hands
just keep improving. My BJJ also keeps getting better with every week.
I can’t wait to show the world what I can do.
Mike: After UFC 101 Amir Sadollah will …???
Hendricks: Have to think if the cut down to 170 was worth it. I see
the UFC having me come in to get defeated, but honestly... I have other
ideas.
Mike: Not to look past your current opponent,
but is there anyone else in the Welterweight division you would like
to fight next?
Hendricks: Well I don’t know yet, because I never think about what fight
comes next, and just think about the fight I have coming up. I don't
want to think about it, because I have learned in wrestling that’s how
you get better... by not looking past anyone.
Mike: If they would have wanted you to compete
in TUF, before signing to the UFC... is that something that you would
have done?
Hendricks: Umm... I think I have the personality for the show, but man,
no video games, no wife... for 39 days? That would be tough!!
Mike: Best wrestling at WW in the UFC?
Hendricks: I would have to say myself, now that I am here with the rest
of them. That’s just how I am, I have to be this way. Because if I don't
believe in myself, no one will.
Mike: If they brought a tag-team title to MMA
and entered you into the Welterweight tourny... who would you want as
your partner?
Hendricks: Well... I would have to go with someone that is in great
shape and that can handle themselves out there. I don't know who, because
I don't know anyone’s personally yet. And that’s what I would have to
go off of.
Mike: If you could change one thing about the
current state/rules/etc. of MMA, what would it be?
Hendricks: They are all great to me. I do not have any problem with
any of the rules! (laughs).
Mike: If they made a movie about your life,
who should they get to play the role of Johny Hendricks?
Hendricks: Brad Pitt. (laughs).
Mike: Ok man, that's all I have for you... anything
you wanna add?
Hendricks: Just to thank God, for everything that he has blessed me
with and everything he had done for me.
