Mike: Lets start
out by looking back at your last fight against Roman Mitichyan, what
were your thoughts on that fight?
George: The fight was a battle. I am happy with how it went, and I was
happy with my performance in all aspects of the fight… stand up, ground
game… had some reversals and got to finish the fight. I really worked
hard leading up to that fight, my conditioning was good and I had a
really good training camp for the fight.
Mike: How’s the injury doing? I know you had
to pull out of the last fight due to it, just wanted to see how you’re
healing up.
George: It’s been almost a year since the fight with Roman and I am
looking forward to fighting again. It wasn’t anything major, but it
was bad enough to keep me from fighting. It’s doing good though, it
also gave me some time to heal up some older injuries. I am feeling
strong, healthy, ready to go! My conditioning is good and my skills
are improving as well.
Mike: How did you get started in MMA?
George: I was always a martial arts fan growing up, and was a big Bruce
Lee fan. I saw a UFC video, and knew I had to do it. So I started doing
jiu-jitsu, and was training in that and competing in competitions, and
in my quest to be a mixed martial artist I picked up wrestling... and
also started competing in that. I continued to work on my jiu-jitsu
and ended up getting invited to compete in the Abu Dhabi, and at that
level I figured I should start working on my striking more to round
out my skills. I continued to compete in any competitions that came
around… jiu-jitsu, boxing, wrestling… all of it. I started fighting
in MMA and doing pretty good and ended up on TUF.
Mike: Speaking of TUF, do you feel it was good
for your career?
George: It’s given me more recognition, and it got me into the biggest
show in the world… the UFC. Of course it pays better now as well, but
the important part to me is that I am able to fight here in the UFC.
Mike: Is there a big difference between MMA here
in the USA and MMA in Australia?
George: Umm… it’s not as big in Australia yet. Martial Arts and MMA
is totally where it was in the USA 5 years ago, it’s there… but not
quite mainstream yet. As far as the fights it’s not much different,
the striking and wrestling and submission game is all there.
Mike: After this next fight at UFC 101, is there
anyone you would like to fight next?
George: Nahh. One at a time. Anyone is fine, I am happy to fight whoever.
I just look at it as fight who is in front of you. I think it is being
more true to the sport and to yourself, if you don’t pick your fights
and just fight who is in front of you.
Mike: This next fight will also be your first
at LW, what made you decide to make the cut?
George: I always train hard, and I was walking around at like... 168
or something like that. So I just decided to try and cut down.
Mike: Do you have a most memorable fight so far
in your career?
George: Yeah, a fight in Guam in January of 06. I fought this Brazilian
guy, for a 3 round back and forth battle! It was a fun fight, we put
on a great ground show. I would have him in submission and he had me
in submissions and we were doing reversals… it was just a great battle,
and was a lot of fun. I got invited to fight in Japan after that one,
so it opened some doors for me as well.
Mike: Also fighting on UFC 101, will be Forrest
Griffin and Anderson Silva... what are your thoughts on this fight?
George: It’s a tough one. Silva is a great striker, and is so accurate...
but Forrest is resilient and always shows up to fight... it should be
a good fight.
Mike: If they brought a Tag Team Title to MMA,
and you were in the LW tourny... who would you want as your partner?
George: (laughs) I don’t know, but I really hope that would never happen...
it would make the sport into a spectacle.
Mike: If you could play matchmaker for a day,
what is one fight you would love to set up and watch happen as a fan?
George: Probably Fedor vs Brock Lesnar.
Mike: Alright man, that’s all I have for you...
is there anything you'd like to add?
George: Thank You to Eddie Bravo and 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu. And also
to Leonard Gabriel at Fisticuffs Boxing in Vancouver Washington.
Mike: Sound Good, Good Luck!
George: Thank You. |
