MMA BUSINESS - BNRG

In April of 1991 Kevin Lawrence was fully absorbed with the research and development of an entirely new concept in nutritional supplementation which led to a hugely successful product called Biolean®. The research was directed at combining amino acid technology, especially that involved in brain chemistry and mood enhancement, with Chinese herbal adaptogen and yin/yang components to create a self adjusting daily supplement intended to increase longevity by rejuvenating the body from the inside out. Needless to say, this involved lengthy and complex discovery and field studies.

But that changed quite dramatically on April 22, 1991 when Khalen Richard Lawrence came into the world by way of Cesarean section. That blessed event soon directed Kevin's research down a completely different path. Because of complications with antibiotic treatment, Khalen's mother Karen, was not able to nurse him, and so like an increasing number of newborns, he began life on infant formula.

Within 8 weeks he had been on 4 different formulas and was experiencing no improvement from extreme colic and accompanying general illness. Khalen's parents became increasingly concerned that his early development was being compromised.

Like many of us, Kevin had been unconsciously following a notion that the doctors would have all the answers and the situation would improve. "Khalen was my first child and I allowed my lack of experience with infants to disengage my otherwise aggressive participation in family or friends health related issues. That realization sparked the immediate beginning of intense research involving a host of PhDs and MDs to whom I am eternally grateful."

The first, and still most critical distinction to appear, was that it was not a lactose, dairy or soy intolerance that was affecting Khalen’s degeneration. Nor did it involve any allergenic responses or any of the other tired, old platitudes that the medical and nutritional communities generally have for this type of problem. These conditions are all lumped together as an accepted, normal and almost inescapable infantile condition known as colic.

In any person past infancy, this malady is called indigestion or gas pain, and as anyone knows, it can be momentarily crippling in intensity and is often accompanied by diarrhea, which is especially dangerous for infants. Imagine an innocent newborn experiencing this trauma and suddenly it becomes a quite un-acceptable condition.

As the research accumulated it became clear that Khalen's condition was caused by the size of the protein molecules (peptides) in the various formulas rather than the source or accompanying ingredients. With only one exception, all the proteins in infant formulas are whole proteins. Put these large peptides in a new and extremely immature intestinal tract and it's a sure bet you're going to have problems.

Peptides must be very small to be absorbed and there is a relatively brief section of bowel where protein breakdown and absorption occur. Once past this section, proteins will move largely undigested into the colon: a place they are not meant to be. Gas, diarrhea and pain are the inescapable results, not to mention that the child (or adult!) is not getting the precious protein needed for healthy growth and development.

The answer seemed obvious: feed Khalen a formula that has protein peptides that are already reduced (hydrolyzed) in size. Unfortunately this was anything but easy to accomplish. The only available infant formula that claimed to contain hydrolyzed protein was six times the cost of any other product. Additionally, further research showed that it was hydrolyzed so poorly and incompletely that in reality it represented only a marginal change over other products.

But with that slight improvement in protein quality Khalen’s condition started on a positive change. The periods of relief were brief and somewhat inconsistent, but the change was undeniable.

At that point the research turned to commercial suppliers of raw protein materials. Kevin was very fortunate to obtain extremely hydrolyzed whey protein powder samples not yet available to manufacturers. He mixed these powders with a variety of other special lipid, carbohydrate and vitamin components necessary to maintain the proper special caloric and nutritional needs of newborns and began feeding the formula to his son.

With the second trial formula the battle was over. Khalen's situation completely reversed without a trace of colic-crying, pain or diarrhea in just 48 hours. The painful condition he had lived with almost from birth was gone. He never suffered from it again.

What began as a parent's resolve to find optimum nutrition for a sick child has developed into a new standard of efficiency and health benefits for dietary protein. The Proto Whey family of bioengineered protein supplements is now available for everyone.
